Plan and prepare

Will insurance pay for this medicine?

Tell your insurance plan precisely which product is proposed and which condition it would treat. Ask for its answer in writing before treating a quoted medicine price as your bill.

What words might the plan use?

The plan calls its list of medicines a formulary. With prior authorization, payment needs the plan’s approval in advance.

Ask whether the product is on that list for the proposed use. Ask what paperwork is needed and who submits it.

Will Medicare pay when weight loss is the medicine’s only use?

As of September 26, 2026, the ordinary Medicare prescription-drug benefit, called Part D, still excluded medicines used to lose weight.

The same medicine may be covered by Part D when used for another accepted condition. The plan’s rules still apply.

What is the temporary Medicare option?

A temporary Medicare program called the GLP-1 Bridge operates separately from ordinary Part D. It helps pay for certain weight-care medicines for people who meet its health and insurance rules.

The body makes a chemical messenger called GLP-1. This natural messenger helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. Some medicines copy what this messenger does.

The patient’s share of the Bridge cost, called a copay, is $50 each month. The stated dates are July 1, 2026 for the start and December 31, 2027 for the end.

As of September 26, 2026.

Eligibility requires an age of at least 18, plus Medicare drug coverage. That coverage must come from either a Part D plan or Medicare Advantage with drug benefits. Some other plan types do not qualify.

The health rules depend on weight for your height and other conditions, such as certain heart or kidney problems or a past heart attack or stroke. Ask your clinician to check your health record against the program’s full rules.

Payment requires both a prescription and advance approval from the program. The medicine must be part of an ongoing plan for food choices and physical activity.

If you have type 2 diabetes, the Bridge is not your payment program. Ask about ordinary Part D coverage instead. Part D also handles other uses, such as certain sleep or liver conditions.

Medicare · When to ask about Part D

A Part D payment for your GLP-1 medicine during 2026 makes you ineligible for the Bridge during that same year, 2026.

What is easy to miss about that payment?

Your own spending on medicines covered by Part D has an annual cap. Money you pay through the Bridge does not help you reach that cap. Those payments add spending outside the limit.

Coupons cannot lower the Bridge’s $50 monthly payment. Neither can Medicare’s additional money help aimed at people on low incomes.

Ask the plan and the clinician who writes your prescription which payment program applies to the exact medicine and reason for using it. Meeting the program’s rules does not mean payment is already approved.
